We've kicked off our next unit of study and will be spending the next several weeks studying adaptations. We spent last week exploring plant adaptations. An adaptation is a feature or behavior that helps a plant or animal survive in its environment such as thorns on a cactus. The students researched the different types of adaptations a plant can have and how those adaptations help plants survive. When they were finished with their research they drew themselves as a plant and had to label all of the adaptations they would have to help them survive in their environment.. Ask your child to tell you about what adaptations they chose to include in their drawing.
Trimester 2 report cards will be coming home with your child in their Friday folder this week so please be on the lookout for them. As a reminder we use a standards based report card which looks a bit different than the traditional report cards you probably received as a child. With this reporting system your child is no longer evaluated based off of where they should be at this point in the year but instead are evaluated based off of the end of 3rd grade expectations. This means you can expect to see mostly 2s and 2.5s for most students at this point in the year with some 1s still possible as well. Please don't panic when you see these scores. You should really consider this report to be more of a progress report rather than a report card with the end of year report being the time when we see students progress to 3s and possibly 4s. It is completely normal for them to not have met the end of 3rd grade expectations yet as it is only March. We will continue to work on all standards reported and by the next report you should see those scores improve to 3s and 4s. If you have any questions about your child's progress please don't hesitate to ask.
Finally, please see the message below from Mrs. Rose about our Spring Sing performance later this week.
Hi GES 3rd grade parents!
I am excited to share with you that on Wednesday, 3/23, your 3rd grader will be involved in a SPRING SING musical performance! This will take place in the music room and while unfortunately we are not going to be inviting parents to watch in person, this performance will be VIDEOTAPED and then shared with you within a few days! My hope and dream is that you will sit with your child (and your family) to watch the performance and sing along with any songs you may know!
On the day of the performance (Wednesday, 3/23), it would be great if your child could wear a SOLID colored shirt, preferably something BRIGHT COLORED (many of our songs include color, sunshine and rainbows!) If you don't own anything like that, then a solid black shirt is fine. Neutral colored pants and shoes would also be preferred.
*** A good trick with shirts is that you can always have your kiddo wear a shirt backwards or inside out if there is writing or a logo on a bright colored shirt that you have.
Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions. The students and I are really looking forward to sharing the gift of MUSIC with you and giving you the opportunity to sing at home as a family!!!
With gratitude,
Brittany Rose
