We finished our novel The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes last week. Upon finishing our novel we read the book Courage by Bernard Waber. We discussed what it means to show courage and then applied the idea of courage to our novel by discussing the events from the book and deciding whether the characters were acting out of courage or fear in each situation. We concluded our book study by writing a book review and taking our Accelerated Reader (AR) comprehension quiz. Not only did this novel help us expand our vocabularies by teaching us several new words, it also taught us an important lesson. Ask your child if they can tell you about any of the words we learned or the moral or lesson from our story. Please let me know if your child is successfully able to do either so that I can recognize them in class for being an active listener.
In math we have been working on learning how to solve one step word problems or number stories. We have learned how to make sense of a problem by looking for what information is provided and what information the problem is asking us to find. We have also worked on making a plan for solving word problems and even how to check that our answer is reasonable by making an estimate. This week we will dive a bit deeper in to our study and begin learning how to solve two step number stories.
Finally, I have some wonderful news to share with you. We have learned that filed trips are officially allowed once again. We are already working hard to get some of our trips scheduled. To make these trips happen we will need parent volunteers. If you are interested in chaperoning a field trip this year please get the approval process started by filling out this form. It takes a bit of time to get cleared so please get the process started as soon as possible. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Have a great week!
