We continued our American Symbols unit last week. So far we have learned about The American flag, Mount Rushmore, The Bald Eagle, The Statue of Liberty, and The Liberty Bell. Ask your child to tell you what they know about these important American symbols. If they are able to tell you some facts they have learned please let me know so that I can recognize them for being an active listener in class.
We wrapped up our first math unit of the year last week as well. We spent some time reviewing all of the skills we worked on before beginning our assessment on Friday. In this unit we reviewed how to use a number grid and other math tools, learned to tell time to the minute, round, create and interpret scaled bar graphs, measure mass, and we even got a basic introduction to multiplication and division. I will go over this assessment with you in a couple of weeks at your child's conference. If you have not had a chance to sign up for a conference time yet please see our online sign up to get signed up.
Finally, the final piece of our homework routine will begin this week. Your child will begin having two nights of word study/spelling practice each week. The spelling homework will fall on the two nights they don't have math homework, typically Tuesdays and Thursdays. On the back of the weekly homework cover sheet will be a menu of word study activities your child may choose from. On the nights they have spelling they can select whichever activities from the menu they would like to help them practice their words for the week. There will be lined paper attached as well that your child may use to complete their spelling practice on. Please note that in class we cut the words apart so that we can sort them based on their spelling patterns but this is not necessary at home. Your child may simply use the list of words to help them complete their selected activities. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Have a great week!
