How can it be March already! It seems this year is just flying by. We finished our 5th math unit of the year last week and spent some time reviewing what we have learned in this unit. In addition to reviewing some basic fraction concepts this unit focused on multiplication strategies that can help us with our harder multiplication facts. One strategy we learned is called the add a group strategy. In this strategy we identify a close but easier fact that can be used to help us solve an unknown fact. For instance, if we know 5x7=35 we can use that easier fact to help us solve 6x7. All we need to do is add one more group of 7. 5x7 is considered and easier fact because we can just count by 5s to get the answer which is a skill all of the students are very familiar with. Your child should be getting more comfortable with this strategy. Ask your child if they can explain the Add a group strategy to you. Please let me know if they are successfully able to do this so that I can recognize them in class for their active listening.
Finally, as I mentioned in my last newsletter the 2nd half of the year is typically very busy in 3rd grade with many field trips to enhance our learning. In order to make all of these trips possible we need more parent volunteers to help transport students. If you have not yet had a chance to complete the volunteer clearance process please do so as soon as possible. Here is a link to the district website where you can find more information on how to start the process.
Have a great week!
