We had a great time on our field trip to the Science Expo last week. Thank you to our amazing parent volunteers who helped make it possible. Your help was greatly appreciated. If you haven't had a chance to check out the pictures I posted please visit our photo gallery and scroll down to the bottom of the page to view them.
We started an opinion writing piece last week that ties into our adaptation unit. The students are currently forming their opinion on whether they think it would be better to have a physical or behavioral adaptation. They took notes while we watched a short video that described the difference between the two and are using their notes to help them with their writing.. They are also using their Chromebooks to help them research reasons to support their opinion along with examples to support their reasons. Ask your child which type of adaptation they think would be better and see if they can give at least one reason to support their opinion.
Finally, this Friday your child will be bringing home their second report card of the year in their Friday folder. As a reminder the district is continuing their role out of standards based report cards which has changed the way in which your child is evaluated. They are no longer evaluated based off of where they should be at this point in the year but instead are evaluated based off of the end of 3rd grade expectations. This means you can expect to see mostly 2s and 2.5s for most students at this point in the year with some 1s still possible as well. Please don't panic when you see these scores. You should really consider this report to be more of a progress report rather than a report card with the end of year report being the time when we see students progress to 3s and possibly 4s. It is completely normal for them to not have met the end of 3rd grade expectations yet as it is only March. We will continue to work on all standards reported and by the next report you should see those scores improve to more 3s with some 4s possibly. A more thorough letter explaining the new way of grading will come home with your child's report card. If you have any questions about your child's performance please don't hesitate to ask.
Have a great week!
