Last week we spent a lot of our math time discussing the concept of fractions. Your child should be able to tell you what a fraction is and/or label fractional parts of a whole. We also learned the vocabulary words numerator and denominator this week. A numerator is the number on the top of a fraction that labels the part of a whole. The denominator is the number down on the bottom of a fraction that labels the total or whole. If your child is able to distinguish between the two please let me know so that I can recognize them for their active listening.
This week we will be kicking of our Winter unit. For the next five weeks we will be studying all things winter. We will be reading and writing winter poetry, learning about winter survival through our Hug a Tree program, and doing a novel study on a book that takes place during a blizzard called Disaster Strikes: Blizzard Night by Marlane Kennedy.
Finally, we have had many students out sick recently. We have been discussing germs in class and ways we can minimize them within our classroom. We have been wiping surfaces daily and encouraging frequent hand washing. Hopefully we can help minimize the impact of flu season on our classroom. If your child will be out from school please don't forget to call their absence into the office.
Have a great week!!
