We are well into our Winter unit. We have been busy studying winter poetry and the students have been extra excited about our winter themed read aloud Disaster Strikes: Blizzard Night by Marlane Kennedy. Each chapter we have read has ended in a cliff hanger. Each time I finish reading a chapter the students let out a loud "awwww" in unison. We have been talking about how this is a technique that authors use to keep us interested and coming back for more. This book has been great for helping us practice making predictions, an important reading skill. In addition to making predictions while we read we have been practicing recounting details from the text, using context clues and or dictionaries to define new vocabulary, expressing our opinions, and identifying cause and effect relationships.
This week will mark the start of our Arts for the Schools visual arts program. An art teacher will begin coming to our classroom once a week to teach us about various artists and art techniques. Next week we will begin working on a clay project. This project will take several weeks to dry and we are looking for shoe boxes to store our projects in while they dry. Please send in a shoe box or similar sized box with your child by next week.
The second half of the year is busy in 3rd grade. We have many field trips planned and I wanted to get the dates out to you as soon as possible so that you can plan accordingly. On March 13th we will be going to the Science Expo at Sierra Nevada College. On May, 3rd we will be going to the Discovery Museum in Reno. On June 7th we will be going to the Nevada Museum of Art and on June 14th we will be going to the Donner State Museum. There are a couple more trips in the works such as our Truckee History field trip, but those have not yet been finalized. I will get those dates to you as soon as I have them. We will need parent volunteers to make all of these trips possible so please consider volunteering if you can. Permission slips will come home for each of these trips as they approach.
Finally, next Thursday, February 15th we will be showcasing all of the wonderful things we have learned in music. The students have been working hard and I hope you all can make it out to see their hard work.
