In math we have been working on strengthening our skills with the four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. With our addition and subtraction we have been focusing in on building our skills with 3 digit numbers. By the end of 3rd grade the students should be able to fluently add and subtract within 1000. We do still teach the traditional algorithms that most of you are familiar with for regrouping but we also teach many other ways to solve a problem as well. The purpose for this is so that your child has a tool box of strategies to choose from when solving a problem. That way if the strategy they are using isn't working or making sense with a particular problem they have a tool box full of other tools or strategies to try. Many of the strategies we are learning also help your child build their number sense so that they have a solid understanding of our base 10 number system. We have been learning many new strategies to help us become more fluent with our multiplication facts as well. We have been learning how to use some of the easier facts, such as our 2s, 5s, and 10s, to help us solve some of the more difficult facts. We even learned a trick for solving our 9s facts. See if your child can teach it to you.
This Thursday, February 15th is the 2nd and 3rd grade music show. The show will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m. All students should be at school by 5:45 p.m. Our class will be meeting in Mrs. Charter's first grade classroom in C-9 to wait our turn to go on stage. The students should come dressed in their best "wedding attire" as Mrs. Waters put it. Please help your child pick out something nice to wear for the show. Mrs. Waters has asked that the students refrain from wearing any shirts with words or characters on them. We will also be doing a daytime performance at 1:15 as well if you are unable to make it to the evening performance. I look forward to seeing you all there!
This week will also be our Valentine's Day celebration. A list of student names came home in your child's Friday folder a couple of weeks ago to aid your child in labeling their valentine's. Please let me know if you need another copy. If you are planning to send in a treat for our celebration please remember to keep it nut free as we do have a peanut allergy in our class. In addition to our Valentine's Day celebration we will also be having a class party on Friday to celebrate the students filling their marble jar for having awesome behavior. The students voted to have a movie/stuffy party. Your child may bring a stuffed animal to school with them on Friday to snuggle with as we watch a movie in the afternoon.
Finally, this is our last week to collect school supplies for the children in Africa. This is a wonderful service project that your child may have told you about that is being led by some of our 5th grade students. Please send in any school supplies you wish to donate by Friday. The class that collects the most supplies will earn a hot chocolate party. They are collecting monetary donations to help with the cost of shipping all of the supplies as well.
I hope you all have a wonderful week and Valentine's Day!
