- Which 21st Century Learning dimensions and competencies did your learning team use as you worked on this task? While working on our collaborative project we used collaboration, skilled communication, technology for learning, and self regulation. We had to work in groups, had shared responsibility, and had to make the substantive decisions together about what we were going to create and who was going to work on each piece of our project. We communicated online as well as in person and even had a particular audience we have to communicate our project to. So we had to be skilled communicators with each other as well as to our audience. Technology was used throughout the project and we had to monitor our work to ensure we completed everything in the time we were given.
- Do you see any applications for this in your instruction? I see many ways that this can be used in my instruction. I can give less direction to my students and allow more choice in the projects I assign. In a 2nd grade classroom I would have to start the year with a list of options for what projects they can complete but I'm sure that by the end of the year after students were familiar with such a format they would be able to select ways to show their learning on their own just as we did with this project. I can also allow them to communicate with each other in different ways such as online so that all students can feel comfortable sharing their ideas.
- Reflect on your lesson/unit created. I really like the lesson we created together. It is a lesson that goes along with the program we use and I can really see myself implementing it. I love that it gives the students options in their product as well as a rubric so they use self regulation to monitor their work and make sure it gets done. I also love that it allows them to work together while at the same time allows me to see their independent contributions. I can even see ways to make it reach even higher levels on the elevator guide in the future if there is time to extend it when I use it with my class. Click here to see the Biography unit we created.
